The spin duo of Ravendra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin have led India to a comfortable 304-run victory in the opening Test of the three-match series at Galle International Stadium on Saturday.
Chasing nearly impossible 550 runs to achieve an historic win, the Islanders were never really in the contest and were eventually bowled out for just 245 as Virat Kohli’s men take 1-0 lead in the series. The star of the show for the visitors was the combination of Ashwin-Jadeja, as both claimed six wickets and gave away 65 and 71 runs respectively.
For Sri Lanka, opener Dimuth Karunaratne missed out on a fighting century as he got out after scoring 97 off 208 balls with the help of nine boundaries. There was some valuable contribution from wicket-keeper Niroshan Dickwella, who scored 67 off 94 but it was just not enough for the home side as no other batsman managed to put any significant resistance.
Earlier, team India declared their second innings at the score of 240 for the loss of three wickets, leaving hosts with option of either chasing down a mountain like target or play out the rest of one and a half day’s play.The star of the show for India was Captain Kohli, as he scored his 17th century in five-day cricket and remained unbeaten on 103 off 136 balls with the help of five boundaries and one six.
For Sri Lanka, pacers Dilruwan Perera, Lahiru Kumara and part-time off-spinner Danushka Gunathilaka picked one wicket each.India opener Shikhar Dhawan was awarded man of the match for scoring breathtaking 190 off just 168 balls on the opening day of the match, which helped team India post 600 in the first innings. The next match of the series will be played in Colombo, which will begin from August 3, 2017.
