Royal Challengers Bangalore produced a spirited all-round performance to outgun Gujarat Lions by 21 runs in a game played at Saurashtra Cricket Stadium in Rajkot. RCB batted first and piled on the runs to amass 213 runs from their full quota of overs. Chris Gayle returned to form in style as Jamaican produced a blazing innings and was well supported by Virat Kohli to set the game up for Royal Challengers Bangalore. Gujarat Lions failed to get close as Brendon McCullum stood till the end and produced a defiant innings of 72 runs to see home side take in the hunt till the last five overs of the game.
Dwayne Smith was dismissed early in the chase as Gujarat Lions got to a bad start. Suresh Raina produced quick-fire 23 runs before Yuzvendra Chahal to see Royal Challengers take firm control of the game. Aaron Finch joined hands with Brendon McCullum to take the side score past 100 but was dismissed at a critical juncture for 19 runs by Pawan Negi. Dinesh Karthik failed in this game which is a rarity for the middle order batsman who has shown consistency for the franchise.
McCullum did not get bob down as he kept producing boundaries at regular intervals but lack of support meant that Gujarat Lions could not get close to the score. But he was dismissed by Chahal to see the New Zealander score 72 runs off 44 balls. Ishan Kishan produced a cameo late in the innings but it looked all over as Royal Challengers Bangalore sealed a much needed win to stay relevant in the competition.
Earlier in the game, Raina won the toss for Gujarat Lions and decided to field first. AB de Villiers and Samuel Badree did not play in this game while Aaron Finch, Shivil Kaushik and Dhawal Kulkarni were picked ahead of Jason Roy, Munaf Patel and Praveen Kumar. Gayle went on the charge from the word go to smash seven sixes to produce a scintillating 77 runs off 38 balls. Virat Kohli also produced a good innings to add 122 runs with Gayle for Royal Challengers Bangalore. Kedhar Jadhav and Travis Head hit some lusty blows to take score well past 210-run mark.
Royal Challengers Bangalore have climbed places in the table after this win while Gujarat Lions are now bottom after conceding their fourth season of the Indian Premier League 2017.
