Rising Pune Supergiant pulled off a surprise win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 17th game of Indian Premier League played at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Pune had never beaten Bangalore before this game but Ben Stokes inspirational spell with the ball helped the visitor’s notch up a much needed win over the hosts.
Virat Kohli got Royal Challengers Bangalore off to a steady start but once he was taken out by Ben Stokes, the side lost the plot to concede yet another defeat in the competition and now sit at last place in the points standings in the Indian Premier League. Royal Challengers Bangalore Captain made a wrong decision to bowl first on a surface that increasingly became difficult for stroke play for batsmen as bowlers held a considerable advantage.
The hosts got their lengths wrong in the last overs and never used variations to effect as Watson conceded 19 runs as Manoj Tiwary plundered three boundaries and a six in an over to help Rising Pune register 161 runs off 20 overs. Ajinkya Rahane and Rahul Tripathi put on 60-odd runs to give Pune a good start in the innings while crucial runs were added by Steven Smith and MS Dhoni to help the side put more than par score on a sluggish pitch. Rising Pune also had a stutter in the middle order as the side went from 127 for 3 to 130 for 7 in no time.
Virat Kohli played well as he opened the innings but Stokes got the better of him to see Captain get dismissed after scoring 28 runs. Chris Gayle had to sit out this game due to poor form as Watson and AB de Villiers got starts and failed to kick-on in their innings due to some good bowling plans laid down by Rising Pune.
The bowling for Rising Pune was good as they changed their pace and used a lot of variations on a surface that was difficult for batsmen. Ben Stokes and Shardul Thakur picked up three wickets apiece while the rest bowled tight spells to see Royal Challengers lose by 27 runs.
